Cell Phone Chargers

By

All cellphones have internal batteries, which need to be periodically recharged in order to maintain functionality. Cell phone chargers are devices used to increase the energy or “charge” in a battery by converting AC power from the mains into DC current, which charges the battery.

Of course it's important to pick the right charger for your model of phone as a Samsung cell phone charger won't fit a Sanyo phone and vice versa. However some companies do sell chargers that have adapters to fit several popular models. These can be very useful for households with different brand of phone, but double check that any third party charger you buy is rated exactly to match your phone. Most phone companies have a 'one-size-fits-all' approach but a 'gotcha' to be aware of is that Nokia have changed the size of their standard phone charger over the last few years, reducing the size. You can get a step down plug cheaply to make the old chargers work in new Nokia phones.

However there are exceptions. For example, when a friends 18 month conveniently chewed through my charger for my new Blackberry phone (luckily not plugged in at the time), I was pleasantly surprised when I found out one of my old Motorola chargers fit and actually charged up my new phone. Of course as always, do check that the specifications match as well as just the physical plug if you take this approach.

Car chargers

There is also a popular way of charging a phone for those individuals on the go. Most automobiles today are equipped with an electric cigarette lighter which doubles as a twelve volt lighter receptacle. This can be a very convenient tool if you use your phone on the move a lot, particularly if coupled with a hands free car kit or bluetooth headset.

Urban Myths

There is a persistent chain email that you may well have seen if you work in an office, that says it is dangerous to use a phone while it is charging. The email cites the case of a man who was killed using his phone. Of course there is always a risk while using any device plugged in to mains power if any part of it is faulty but it is safe to say that cell phone chargers are designed to be used under the conditions specified in the phone manual. If the manual doesn't warn against using the phone while charging you should have no more risk than with any other kitchen or home appliances.

Alternative Energy Car Chargers

Through the study of alternative methods of energy, a British company came up with the bright idea of a phone charger that could be attached to the body and actually be charged up from dancing. In June of 2008, the device was announced and the prototype created a lot of excitement. However, it is yet to be released to the public for purchase. Also widely available are hand cranked phone chargers. These take a fair while to charge a phone but are a great option in an emergency. Some have built in torches too, so are useful for more than just phone charging.

Solar powered phone chargers that have actually been released and are available for consumers to buy. Through innovative technology, solar chargers convert sunlight into electrical current. Naturally, the more sunshine yielded the more power that will be produced. The ISun Solar Cell Phone and Battery Charger is a product that is one of the most complete charging kits for small electronic appliances and phones alike. It comes with plugging accessories and adapters that allows you to use over ninety percent of all small electronic appliances.

Many mobile phone charger options are available for consumers. Whether it be the standard chargers used in your home, a car charger, or one of the innovative solar or kinetic powered devices, the choice is yours on which will best suit your needs.
