Getting Connected With A Cell Phone Antenna Booster
By Tim J F
Most of us know about the frustration of bad cell phone reception in certain parts of the house, dropped calls, sound fading in and out, and sporadic service. What most of us don't know is that there are cell phone antenna boosters that can relieve a lot of these problems that you're having with your cell phone.
Different models of antenna boosters.
There are a lot of different styles of antenna boosters, some more effective than others, and some easier to install than others. Here's an overview of the major styles and models.
Internal booster
This is the most common style of cell phone antenna booster, and also the cheapest. Usually, these are installed by clipping a small strip of a metallic looking material under your cell phone's battery. The product works by drawing stray cell phone signals that are going through the air. Most commonly, these boosters are good for adding an extra bar inside of a building or tunnel, but will not add a whole lot of extra signal beyond that. They are great for older cell phone models or if your phone fades in certain areas of the city.
External booster
There are many different styles of these. Some are a small plastic clip-on that attaches to your cell phone's antenna, and some are intricate antennas that you install in your home or car.
Clip-ons
These work similarly to internal boosters in that their only function is to pick up stray cell phone signals that your phone's natural antenna may be missing. Their efficacy too is similar to internal boosters: they are good for, in general, a bar of signal reception in difficult areas.
External antennas
These are generally very expensive, but they work wonderfully for boosting your signal in your home or car. Generally, you will install an external antenna in your car or house. This antenna will serve to pick up cell phone signals far in excess of the amount of signals your phone's antenna will pick up. The antenna is then hooked up to a transmitter, which can be either wired or wireless, which transmits the signals to your phone. This style of booster is extremely effective, good for one to two extra bars, and even three in some cases. If you're having extreme difficulty with your cell phone in your home or car, then these just might be the solution for you.
Installation
Almost every cell phone antenna booster is very easy to install. You either attach a small adhesive strip for internal boosters, or clip a small booster to your phone's antenna. External boosters that use a separate antenna are generally simple to install, as long as you're confident hooking up your computer or installing the cables on a new television. If you think you might have trouble installing an external cell phone booster antenna, most providers offer some kind of free or very cheap installation.
How they work
Most cell phone antenna boosters operate in the same basic manner. They pull stray cell phone signals from the air that your cell phone's native antenna is not picking up. It is basically akin to attaching a longer antenna to your cell phone, though the strength and efficacy of each antenna booster is quite different.
Safety
There are no undue safety concerns with cell phone antenna
boosters beyond the standard concerns with using any sort of cell
phone. Boosters can make it easier to talk clearly in your car, but make
sure that if you do use your cell phone in your car that you observe
local laws and always keep your eyes on the road.Hands free or car kits are a safer alternative.
